Legend holds that the Troop of the Titians was the most successful adventuring company ever. They stormed castles, found ancient treasure, and became very powerful. It is said their leader Branden Strongarm was the swiftest swordsman in the land. It is said that he killed 20 giants with one sweep of his sword. Also in the troop was a Sorcerer of unbelievable power. He held a mighty dragon in thrall while the rest of the party looted the hoard.
Posseburge is a sleepy farming town that happens to have a salt mine. The salt mine, just south of town, opened about 15 years ago, and employees about 25 people. The town of Possburg is small with about 150 occupants, with the majority being farmers who live outside of town. Those that don’t farm or work in the mine, manage to make a living by selling goods or services to the population. The only claim to fame the Possburg has is that it hosts a monastery for wayward monks (Monk population not counted as part of the population). Notable citizens of Possburg include Gugde the hermit (who is rumored to be a “Man of Magic”), Bandon Stealback the blacksmith (who is rumored to have a shady past) and Altec Blotch the tanner, a greasy little man, that smiles constantly and always smells of chemicals. Other notables are Cleric Burny Pureheart (rumored to have been “asked to leave” a former temple assignment), and Benton Smythe heir to the salt mine (essentially the kind of person you don’t like to have around). Except for Benton, these people are on the town council and essentially run the town. Other pillars of the community are Jeb the tavern owner, George the merchant, and Bob the town “loony”. The salt mine is the brainchild of Theodore Benjamin Smythe. Benjamin intended to bring wealth and prosperity to Posseburge but all he has managed to do is bring in some outsiders to work the mine. He has made some money for himself, but the project never seemed to take off. Something always disrupts his plans. Explosions caused by poorly trained workers (Drake Whiteraven), the disruption and short closure when a few workers disappeared and the latest “secret mission” by the Wind Swept Wanderers. Sometimes it seems to be more than coincidence. Other than the occasional birth, marriage, kidnapping, tremors, town council disappearance, or Bob getting too drunk and raging for a week about having “Super Powers” (whatever they are), life has been pretty calm in sleepy old Posseburge.
What most of the citizens don’t know is that the town is built on the ruins of an ancient city. The town counsel knows this as well as a few others. The city was once the capitol of a vast empire, now long forgotten. Those that know of the city protect it’s ancient secrets, as well as protecting the ROTFC from the horrors that sometimes escape. The ancient city was known as “Pose’ ” from the word in the ancient language meaning “Center”. Indeed, the city was the center of learning, arts, commerce, religion, and politics. Pose’ was destroyed by the avarice of the powerful wizards that tampered with things that aught not to be tampered with. Creating a portal for traveling time and space, the wizard (and clerics) traveled beyond imagination bringing back wonders beyond knowing. This rift in the continuum attracted the attention of fell creatures of immense power that coveted escape and power. These fell creatures were the downfall of the city. Jemode himself fell from power, combating this ancient evil.
Landsend the furthest west of the Five Cities and easilly the most chaotic. The peoples of Landend are know for piracy smuggling. The people are nice enough as long as you have coin. Those without coin, or unable to meet debts, often end up in the city dungeons. Few return who go there, though the choice is not much better leaving it up to the street bosses. If you are lucky, they will only enslave you to work of your debt. The unlucky ones loose their tongue and are enslaved for the rest of their lives. Slavery is only permitted for debtors and debtors cannot be sold.
